Teach Your Kids That Parents Can Make Mistakes

Yesterday, a guest at our hotel came up to the front desk.

Guest: “My key stopped working.”

Me:

“Okay. Can I see your ID, please?”

Of course, his name wasn’t on the reservation, only his wife’s.

Me: *Politely* “I’m sorry, sir, but since your wife’s name is the one on the reservation, she’ll need to come down to get a new key and add your name to the reservation.”

He looked a little miffed but walked away. A couple of seconds later, he came back.

Guest: “I don’t want to get my wife. She’s my wife; we have the same last name!”

The usual excuses. I politely stood my ground and explained that it was a security policy. He stormed off.

Shortly thereafter, he came up with his wife and two kids and snapped:

Guest: “Here, I brought the whole family this time!”

As I was making the keys, I heard him tell his kids:

Guest:

“This is the guy who made you leave cookie decorating early. Tell him to hurry up!”

Me: *To the kids* “Actually, you should remind your parents to add both of their names to the reservation next time, so you don’t have to leave in the first place!”

The parents immediately both shut up for the rest of the process, and then at the end, the guy quietly apologized.

I didn’t hear from them again for the rest of their stay.
