I took a vacation after my father pushed me out of the family business over a conflict with my stepmother. On the boardwalk, I ran into my ex-fiancé—the one who fled our wedding a year ago. He was with her.
But the lesson my father and I gave them was unforgettable.
I stood in my father’s office, my palms damp as his voice thundered across the desk.
“Do you ever think before you act?” he snapped. “How many times must I remind you to show respect to my wife?”
I clenched my fists. His wife.
My stepmother. He had married her when I was only six years old. I was thirty-six now, but nothing had changed. Our relationship had always been toxic.
Outwardly, we pretended for his sake. But inside, we despised each other.
“She set me up, Dad,” I said firmly. “That argument a few days ago—she twisted everything.
She made it look like I insulted her, but I didn’t. She’s been trying to push me out for years.”
His eyes narrowed. “Excuses.
Always excuses. Do you think I don’t see how careless you are? Because of your mistake, the company lost a fortune.”
I shook my head, my voice rising.
“It wasn’t my mistake! She orchestrated it. I manage my department responsibly, but she—she sabotages me.
You think she’s your right hand, but she’s pulling the strings!”
“Enough!” he slammed his hand against the desk, the sound making me flinch. “You will not accuse her. She is the one cleaning up your mess right now—out there on a business trip, meeting with partners, trying to restore the damage you caused!”
My chest tightened.
“Do you even hear yourself? She’s not my mother, and she never will be. My mother is gone, and this woman has never been anything but poison in my life!”
His face turned crimson.
He pushed his chair back and stood, pointing toward the door.
“That’s it. You’re finished here. You no longer work in this company.
You have enough knowledge and experience—find a job somewhere else. I think it will be better for this family if you leave.”
“Dad—”
“No!” he shouted, his voice shaking with rage. “I won’t listen to another word.
Please, leave my office. Now.”
The words stung worse than I expected. My throat burned, but I refused to let him see me break.
Without another word, I turned on my heel and stormed out, my heels clicking sharply against the floor.
